Meet the coaches
In ‘Meet the coaches’ we present the true heroes of Hockey Dreams. The coaches combine education and coaching to strengthen both themselves and their communities. These ambitious and driven youngsters are ready to make their mark on the world. Peter Mwanza is one of our Zambian Hockey Dreams Coaches and this is his story.
Hi!
I am Peter Mwanza and I was born on the 19th of May, 2000. I stay with my parents, my brothers and sisters in district Matero North – Lusaka (Zambia). We are five boys, three girls and I am the third born. My big brother and I play in the same club named Springfield Hockey Club, and here I coach a team in which three of my brothers are in too. I am also one of the Hockey Dreams Coaches in Zambia.
My hockey life
In 2017 I was chosen by the Kadish Coaches in Zambia (formerly the foundation was named Kadish Foundation) to be one of the Hockey Dreams Coaches. Before, I was already helping out Kelvin and Godfrey with things like when there were too many kids on the field. So you can imagine I was really happy the day that I heard that I was chosen to become one of the Hockey Dreams Coaches, as from that I could help out even more.
Now I am mainly setting my mind on coaching courses and skills and I am thinking of forming an academy team within the next couple of years; a team for under the age of seventeen for both girls and boys.
My education
Hockey Dreams Foundation is the reason I am going back to school and learning more. The foundation supported me to go back to school during our family’s struggle caused by our financial situation. I stopped going to school in 2017 after I wrote and passed my exam.
In 2018 I was ready to go to high school but I did not due to our financial situation. And so I did not go to school for two years and all my friends – whom I wrote my exams with – all stated that high school would really ‘wow’ me. I was at home but my friends were helping me by giving notes and teaching me what they were taught in school during the day.
Now that is in the past and I am going back to school because of Hockey Dream’s support. I started going to school at the Nelson Mandela Primary School in Chunga. It takes me around 30 to 35 minutes to go to school and I am in grade 10 (high school level) now. I am happy to be in school again.
My classes
We are with sixty each in class and we sit two by two at each desk. I have two good friends I share things with in class or at break time. We teach each other and we also correct each other when one is wrong. The names of my friends are Agnes Banda and Benison Zula.
My favourite teachers are Mr Banda and Mr Mupeta. Mr Banda teaches Art and Design and Mr Mupeta teaches mathematics. They are the best because they repeat and go back in their teaching material when their students do not understand well. In the future I would love to be an Art and Design-teacher.
I experience these moments thanks to the Hockey Dreams Foundation-family who supported me all along. Thank you for supporting our country Zambia.
