Sport for Development (S4D) is a powerful and innovative approach, using the power of sport to address the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It helps people, communities and countries grow in a positive way. It teaches important values like teamwork, fair play, discipline and respect. S4D programmes like Hockey Dreams use these values to help young people reach their full potential.
The SDGs, adopted by the United Nations in 2015, hold a broad range of global challenges, including poverty eradication, quality education, gender equality, health and well-being, peace and justice, and environmental sustainability. S4D aligns itself with these goals by utilizing sports as a platform to address various social issues and drive progress in local communities.
SDG3: Good Health and Well-being
One of the key strengths of S4D is its ability to promote health and well-being, which directly aligns with SDG 3. Because we all know, that playing sports helps people stay healthy. It makes them stronger, improves mental health, and reduces the risk of diseases. Within Hockey Dreams, we also teach about health, provide medical help, and promote healthy lifestyles.
SDG4: Quality Education
Sport for development programmes help children and young people learn important life skills like leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving. By combining sports and education, S4D programmes create safe and inclusive spaces where children are encouraged to go to school, stay engaged in learning, and perform better in their studies.
SDG5: Gender Equality
Our sport for development programme support girls and women by giving them the chance to play sports and actively engage them. It helps challenge gender stereotypes and encourages equal opportunities in sports and education, to fight challenging gender norms and stereotypes.
SDG13: Environmental Sustainability
S4D can also help the environment. During our camps, our coaches teach the children about protecting nature and animals, recycling (including sports equipment) and turn them into new products and they create awareness around environmental issues.
SDG16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions
Sport brings people from different backgrounds together. It creates social cohesion, respect, tolerance, dialogue and teamwork. Our coaches are seen as true role models and game changers, so they become agents of positive change within their communities.
